With this itinerary, you’ll navigate historic streets and indulge in port wine and more! And you’ll have plenty of time to rest and soak up the city’s atmosphere. Based on my personal experience hosting family and first-time visitors, this plan is a perfect way to see Porto like a local.

When to Visit Porto

The best time to visit Porto is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the city is less crowded than in the peak summer season.

If you visit in the spring, you’ll enjoy blooming flowers and mild temperatures. Fall offers comfortable weather and the bonus of grape harvest season in the nearby Douro Valley.

How to Get to Porto

By Air: Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) is well-connected with many international destinations. From the airport, you can take a metro, taxi, or shuttle bus to the city center.

By Train: If you’re coming from Lisbon or other parts of Portugal, the train is a convenient option. The journey from Lisbon to Porto takes about 2.5 to 3 hours on the high-speed Alfa Pendular train.

By Bus: Several bus companies offer routes to Porto from various cities in Portugal and Spain. This is often a budget-friendly option.

Getting Around Porto

Porto is a very walkable city, especially in the historic center. However, for longer distances, you have several options for getting around Porto:

Metro: Porto’s metro system is efficient and connects the main areas of the city, including the airport.
Buses and Trams: The bus and tram network covers most parts of Porto. Trams are a charming way to see the city, especially the historic tram line 1 along the river.
Taxis and Ride-Sharing: Taxis are readily available, and ride-sharing services like Uber operate in Porto. I find that Uber and Bolt are relatively inexpensive over taxis.
Walking: Many of Porto’s attractions are within walking distance of each other, making it a pleasant way to explore the city.

Where to Stay for 2 Days in Porto

Ribeira: This UNESCO World Heritage site is close to many attractions and offers picturesque views of the Douro River. It’s perfect for those who want to be in the heart of the action.
