Livraria Lello

Livraria Lello is often touted as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, and it’s a must-visit for families in Porto if you love bookstores (otherwise, you may want to skip the crowds). The stunning architecture, with its grand staircase and stained glass ceiling, makes it feel like stepping into a fairy tale. Make sure to visit early to avoid crowds and take your time exploring the various sections of the bookstore.

Your ticket also acts as a voucher for any book purchase. There were plenty of children’s books in English to choose from. We chose a children’s book on visiting Porto!

São Bento Train Station is not just a transportation hub but a cultural landmark as well. The station is famous for its azulejos (traditional Portuguese tiles). Upon looking closer, you’ll see the tiles depict important historical events in Portugal’s history.

Children will be fascinated by the intricate tilework and the stories they tell. The station is still operational, so you can combine a visit with a train trip to nearby destinations.

World of Discoveries

World of Discoveries is a fun, interactive museum that brings Portugal’s Age of Exploration to life, making it especially engaging for kids. The boat ride and hands-on exhibits recreate the journeys of famous Portuguese explorers in an immersive way.

However, when we visited, I felt the museum glamorized the discoveries while overlooking the darker aspects of colonization. It’s still an interesting experience, but it presents a very one-sided view of history, so this is something to think about before your visit!

SEA Life Porto

SEA Life Porto is another favorite of ours, especially during rainy days. We celebrated our son’s 6th birthday here, and it was an unforgettable experience. The aquarium offers a chance to see a wide variety of marine life, from colorful fish to majestic sea turtles.

Kids can walk through the ocean tunnel, get up close with sea creatures in interactive touch pools, and even watch feeding sessions. SEA Life Porto provides both entertainment and education, making it a perfect family outing.

Puppet Museum

The Puppet Museum (Museu das Marionetas do Porto) is a delightful place where children can explore the world of puppetry. The small museum showcases a diverse collection of puppets from around the world. Sometimes, there are interactive workshops where kids can create their own puppets.

Botanical Gardens & Natural History and Science Museum

The Botanical Gardens & Natural History and Science Museum is a fantastic place for families to explore. We recently visited and were surprised by how expansive and interactive the museum is. The museum offers a range of exhibits that captivate kids, with hands-on activities and displays that make learning fun.

Our children loved moving between the different exhibits, discovering something new each time. We easily spent two hours exploring, and afterward, we enjoyed a relaxing stroll through the beautiful gardens and a snack at the café. It’s an ideal spot for a day of educational fun and outdoor enjoyment.

Science museum (Pavilhão da Água)

The Science Museum, known as Pavilhão da Água, is another excellent destination for families. This museum focuses on the wonders of water. Ther are interactive exhibits that teach kids about the science and importance of water in our world. The Porto Tram Museum is a unique and fascinating place where families can learn about the history of Porto’s tram system. The museum features a collection of vintage trams, which kids can explore. Some exhibits explain the development of public transportation in Porto. It’s a great way to combine a bit of history with a fun, hands-on experience. Kids will enjoy seeing the old trams up close and might even get a chance to hop aboard one of the historical vehicles.

3D Fun Art Museum

The 3D Interactive Museum uses cutting-edge technology to create interactive exhibits that bring history, science, and art to life in 3D! Children can interact with the displays, participate in virtual reality experiences, and engage with educational content in a fun and engaging way.

Casa Escondida, or the Hidden House, is a fascinating museum tucked away in Porto. It offers a unique glimpse into the city’s past, with exhibits that highlight the daily lives of its residents throughout history. The museum is small and intimate, making it perfect for families to explore together. Children will enjoy the interactive elements and the chance to learn about Porto’s history in a hands-on environment.

The Natural History Museum in Porto offers a comprehensive look at the natural world. There are exhibits on everything from dinosaurs to local wildlife. Finding the Half Rabbit street art in Vila Nova de Gaia is a fun and quirky adventure for families. This impressive piece of urban art by Bordalo II is made from recycled materials and cleverly combines two halves to form a striking image of a rabbit. Clérigos Church offers a spectacular immersive light show called Spiritus, which is a must-see. We attended this show and were amazed by the stunning light displays. The combination of history, architecture, and modern technology creates a magical atmosphere. The church’s interior was truly transformed!

The only downside is that the showtimes are a bit later in the evening, as the effect is best when it’s darker inside the church. However, it’s worth adjusting bedtime for this unforgettable experience.

Painting your own tile is a fantastic hands-on activity that lets kids unleash their creativity. Plus, they can engage with a piece of Portuguese culture. Playing mini golf at Foz is a fun and affordable activity for families. We aways have a great time here, spending about 1.5 hours enjoying the course. At only €1.50 per kid, it’s a budget-friendly option that provides plenty of entertainment. After your game, take the opportunity to explore the Foz shore, which offers beautiful views and a pleasant seaside atmosphere. It’s a perfect combination of play and relaxation.

Mercado do Bolhão

Mercado do Bolhão is a bustling market where you can sample a variety of local foods. While not a traditional sit-down restaurant, it’s a great place to try different Portuguese delicacies. The lively atmosphere and diverse food options make it an exciting spot for kids to explore and taste new things.

Fábrica da Nata

Fábrica da Nata specializes in Portugal’s famous custard tarts, pastéis de nata. It’s a must-visit for families with a sweet tooth. The cozy atmosphere and delicious pastries make it a perfect stop for a mid-morning snack or an afternoon treat. Kids will love watching the tarts being made through the open kitchen.

McDonald’s Imperial

For a quick and familiar meal, head to McDonald’s Imperial. Located in a beautiful historic building, this McDonald’s offers the usual kid-friendly menu with the added bonus of unique Portuguese decor. It’s a reliable option if you’re in need of a fast and fuss-free meal.

Porto Cruz 360 Terrace Bar Lounge

Porto Cruz 360 Terrace Bar Lounge offers stunning views of the Douro River and Porto’s skyline. While it might seem more like an adult venue, it’s quite family-friendly. The terrace provides ample space for kids to move around, and the menu includes a variety of light meals and snacks that kids will enjoy.

Best Places for Ice Cream

Porto has some fantastic spots for ice cream, perfect for a treat on a warm day. Here are a few places where you can indulge in delicious flavors:

• Santini: Known for its rich and creamy ice cream, Santini offers a wide range of flavors that will satisfy any sweet craving.
• Amorino: Famous for its flower-shaped ice cream cones, Amorino uses high-quality ingredients to create both classic and unique flavors.
• Gelataria Portuense: A local favorite, Gelataria Portuense offers artisanal ice cream with a focus on fresh and natural ingredients.

Douro Valley Wine Tour (Kid-friendly options)

The Douro Valley is famous for its wine, but it also offers beautiful landscapes and family-friendly activities. Many tour operators provide kid-friendly options, including boat rides on the Douro River and visits to vineyards that offer grape juice tastings for the little ones. The stunning scenery and relaxed pace make it a great day trip for families looking to enjoy nature and culture together.

Aveiro & Costa Nova

A day trip to Aveiro and Costa Nova is a delightful experience for families. Aveiro features picturesque canals and colorful moliceiro boats. You can take a boat ride through the canals, which is a fun activity for kids. 

Just a short drive away is Costa Nova, known for its charming striped houses along the beach. We found this trip very easy, and our kids loved exploring the vibrant, candy-colored homes and playing on the sandy shores.

Note: You might hear Aveiro call the “Venice of Portugal”, but I try to avoid using this as this city is beautiful in its own way and should not be compared to Venice. 

Braga

Braga is a city rich in history and culture, perfect for a family day trip. Visit the impressive Bom Jesus do Monte, a sanctuary with a beautiful baroque staircase. The climb might be a bit challenging for younger kids, but there is also a funicular that offers a convenient and enjoyable way to reach the top. 

Once there, you can explore the church and enjoy panoramic views of the city. Braga’s historic center is also worth exploring, with its charming streets, shops, and cafes.

Guimarães

Known as the birthplace of Portugal, Guimarães is a city steeped in history. Families can visit the Guimarães Castle, where kids can let their imaginations run wild exploring the ancient fortress. The nearby Palace of the Dukes of Braganza offers another glimpse into the past with its grand halls and exhibits. The city’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with plenty of quaint streets to wander and enjoy a leisurely lunch at a family-friendly restaurant.

Use a Baby Carrier

Porto’s cobbled streets and hilly terrain can make using a stroller difficult. Plus, many attractions and restaurants had limited space to store strollers. When our kids were 4 and 2, we found that a baby carrier and a toddler shoulder carrier worked best. This allowed us to navigate the city comfortably and keep our hands free for other tasks.

Use Public Transportation

Porto has a reliable public transportation system, including trams, buses, and the metro. Kids usually enjoy tram rides, and the metro is an easy way to get around the city. Note that children under 4 do not need a ticket for the metro, making it even more convenient for families. Consider getting an Andante card for unlimited travel on public transport, which is cost-effective and easy to use.

Plan for Meal Times

While traditional Portuguese restaurants may not have specific kids’ menus, they are generally very accommodating with high chairs and friendly staff. However, most restaurants close at 3 pm and do not reopen for dinner until 7 pm. Prepare snacks to bridge the gap—using a “snacklebox” with your kid’s favorite snacks can be a lifesaver during these hours. It certainly did for us!

Pack Essentials

Porto’s weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and a lightweight rain jacket. Don’t forget sunscreen and hats for sunny days. A small backpack with snacks, water, and wipes will keep kids comfortable during your explorations.

Choose Family-Friendly Accommodations

Select accommodations that offer family-friendly amenities such as extra beds, cribs, and kitchenettes. There are many neighborhoods in Porto where you can stay. But staying in centrally located areas will reduce travel time to major attractions, making managing the day with young children easier.

Take Breaks

Exploring Porto can be tiring for little ones, especially if you’re trying to see the city in one or two days. Schedule regular breaks at parks, cafes, or along the riverfront to let kids rest and play. Spots like the Crystal Palace Gardens and Parque da Cidade offer beautiful settings for a family picnic and some downtime.

Porto’s rich culture can be fascinating for children. Engage them with stories about the history and legends of the places you visit. Interactive museums like the World of Discoveries and the Puppet Museum are perfect for making history fun and engaging for kids.

Don’t be surprised if Ubers and other ride-sharing services do not require a car seat or booster seat—plan accordingly for your family’s safety and comfort.
