If you’re looking for a relaxing escape in the Douro Valley, Lamego Hotel & Life might just be the perfect spot. We recently stayed here for a romantic weekend getaway, and from the stunning views to the luxurious spa, it exceeded our expectations in so many ways.
But is Lamego Hotel & Life the hotel for your trip?
In this review, we’ll share everything you need to know—from the rooms and amenities to what we loved (and what could be better). Whether you’re planning a wine-filled retreat or a peaceful countryside stay, here’s what to expect in our Lamego Hotel & Life review.
Why We Chose Lamego Hotel & Life
When planning our romantic weekend getaway, we wanted a hotel that was close to Porto but still felt like an escape—somewhere we could unwind without spending hours on the road (I’m not the greatest Passenger Princess 😅).
Lamego Hotel & Life caught our attention because of its spa, peaceful countryside setting, and beautiful design. The photos on the hotel’s website were absolutely stunning—sleek yet cozy interiors, breathtaking views of the Douro Valley, and a spa that looked like the perfect place to relax.
We were hoping for a mix of comfort, luxury, and tranquility, and we couldn’t wait to see if the experience lived up to the pictures.
Where is Lamego Hotel & Life?
Lamego Hotel & Life is located in the town of Lamego, right on the edge of the Douro Valley, one of Portugal’s most scenic wine regions. It’s about a 1 hour and 30-minute drive from Porto, making it a convenient option for a day trip or a weekend getaway!
However, getting there without a car can be tricky. Public transportation options are limited, so we recommend renting a car—we picked ours up from Porto Airport at a relatively inexpensive rate, and it made getting around and exploring the area so much easier. The hotel also offers free parking, which was a nice bonus.
First Impressions & Check-In Experience
Check-in at Lamego Hotel & Life was smooth and hassle-free, thanks to the online check-in option we completed beforehand. When we arrived, the staff welcomed us with a glass of white wine, which was a nice touch after the drive. The lobby was modern and well-organized, giving a good first impression!
The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. They even offered to switch to English after we attempted to speak in our limited Portuguese, which was a relief! They quickly checked us in and provided key details about the hotel – of which the most important was where the spa is located!
They also recommended a few nearby restaurants, which was a big help since we hadn’t planned where to eat yet. Overall, the check-in process was efficient and welcoming, setting a good tone for our stay.
Our Room at Lamego Hotel & Life
We booked a Superior Valley View room, but the view wasn’t quite what we expected. While we could see the valley, the window was small, and since our room was on the first floor, we had more of a view of the parking lot below than the landscape. Thank goodness we were able to get our fill of the Douro Valley views on our drive!
The room itself was modern, minimalistic, and clean, with a queen-sized bed and couch. At the entryway, there was a cabinet stocked with a small fridge, a coffeemaker, and a carafe of water. There were even some small treats and a sweet welcome note!
The bathroom was sleek and spacious, featuring a walk-in shower (with the best water pressure, I might add!), complete with plush robes!
Overall, while the room was comfortable and well-equipped, we would recommend requesting a higher floor for a better Douro Valley view.
⭐ Highly recommend! We stayed at Lamego Hotel & Life, and it was a fantastic weekend getaway—spacious, comfortable, and the best spa amenities! Head here to check availability and rates now.
Hotel Amenities & Services
Pool & Spa
One of the main reasons we chose Lamego Hotel & Life was for the spa and wellness facilities, and they definitely delivered! There’s both an indoor and outdoor pool, a sauna, a Turkish bath, and a full-service spa offering massages and treatments.
We booked a couples massage during our stay, and it was a relaxing highlight of the weekend! The spa area felt calm and uncrowded, perfect for unwinding.
Unfortunately, iwas too cold, so the outdoor pool was closed. But we plan on visiting again in the summer – possibly with the kids! 😅
Restaurant & Bar
The hotel has an on-site restaurant and bar, with a daily breakfast buffet included in our stay. The breakfast spread was solid—fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, and local specialties—plenty to start the day off right. We didn’t have dinner at the hotel restaurant, but the menu looked appealing and the space had a cozy, upscale feel.
Other amenities & Services
There’s a small gym on-site for guests who want to squeeze in a workout (I mean, if that’s your thing!) But I wouldn’t mind working out with this amazing Douro Valley view from the treadmill!
Parking was free and convenient, which we appreciated since we had a rental car. The Wi-Fi worked well throughout the hotel, and while this wasn’t a kid-focused trip, we noticed the staff was friendly and welcoming to families. Everyone we interacted with was helpful and kind, always ready with suggestions or answers to our questions.
What We Loved About Our Stay
- There were a few standout moments during our stay at Lamego Hotel & Life that really made it feel special:
- The spa and wellness area was hands-down our favorite part. The loungers in the spa overlooked the Douro Valley, and relaxing there after a massage was the ultimate treat.
- We were also able to get a late checkout at 2 PM to accommodate our couple’s massage, which meant we didn’t have to rush and could really enjoy the spa amenities until the very end.
- The breakfast buffet was another highlight—expansive and full of variety, with something for everyone. Fresh pastries, eggs, fruit, local cheeses… we looked forward to it each morning.
- The hotel had a calm, peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a weekend recharge.
- Friendly, helpful staff who made us feel welcome and helped with recommendations.
- It was a perfect mix of comfort and relaxation, with just the right amount of luxury.
What Could Be Improved
While we really enjoyed our stay, there were a couple of things that could’ve been better. The walls were quite thin, so we could hear voices and movement from neighboring rooms, which made it a bit harder to fully relax at times.
We also woke up on Sunday morning to the sound of hammering or construction, which wasn’t exactly the peaceful vibe we were hoping for. It may have been a one-off situation, but it’s worth noting if you’re a light sleeper or sensitive to noise.
Nothing major, but a little more soundproofing would definitely improve the overall experience.
Is Lamego Hotel & Life Worth It?
If you’re looking for a peaceful, relaxing getaway in the Douro Valley with a focus on wellness, comfort, and good food, Lamego Hotel & Life is absolutely worth considering. The spa facilities, stunning valley views, and generous breakfast made our romantic weekend feel extra special.
While we did notice a few noise issues and the view from our room wasn’t quite as impressive as expected, the overall experience was still memorable—and the late checkout and excellent service helped make up for those small drawbacks.
We’d definitely stay here again, especially for a couple’s retreat or an escape from the city with the kids!
